Owner's Description
1925-S Double Eagle, MS63
Branch Mint Melt Victim
1925-S $20 MS63 NGC. The scarcity of the 1925-S double eagle in Mint State seems to belie the issue's mintage of more than 3.7 million pieces. Seldom is such a coin encountered, and rarely without heavy abrasions. Although this issue is not generally included in the list of major late-series melt rarities, its overall scarcity is largely owed to the gold melts of the mid-1930s. Those pieces that survive owe much to European bank hoards, where they remained hidden until recent decades. This Select example displays satiny yellow-gold luster and minimally abraded surfaces. Faint die doubling is discernible on Liberty's lower gown and many of the peripheral stars. Census: 34 in 63 (1 in 63+), 25 finer
