Owner's Description
“Earring Variety”. This example of the 1844 is a scarce variety that has a punch mark in Miss Liberty’s earlobe. These earlobe punch marks occur occasionally throughout the Liberty Half Eagle series. In most cases, they are an interesting variety; in some cases such as the 1876-S, all known coins have the “earring”. If anybody knows why these punches were made, I would be interested in knowing the reason.
This particular example has rich frosty cartwheel luster and is a pleasing honey gold. The strike is consistently strong on both the obverse and reverse. Purchased from Doug Winter; ex: US Coins.
