Owner's Description
Winter Variety 1, Die State 1. The 1842-C Small Date is the rarest issue among the Charlotte half eagles, and the only Charlotte gold coin rarer is the 1849-C Open Wreath gold dollar. Doug Winter estimates that only about 18% of the 27,000+ 1842-C half eagles were of the Small Date type. The orange-gold surfaces are abraded on each side, typical for the issue, but most of the abrasions are small and scarcely visible without a loupe. Heritage 8/13: 5847.
