Owner's Description

In 1957, the Philadelphia mint produced 160 million Roosevelt dimes putting the date within the top ten most minted. However, dimes with full torch strikes are much less common. PCGS estimates that only 52,000 1957-P Roosevelts with full torch strikes survive in MS 65 condition or better.

In total, there are only 157 of these dimes graded MS 65 or better between the populations of NGC and PCGS. This puts the date within the lowest five silver Roosevelts to be certified FT or FB by NGC or PCGS, and creates a very high premium for dimes with the designation.

In July 2013, a PCGS certified 1957-P 10c MS 67 FB (25031309) sold for $2,233 through Heritage Auctions. Another sold through Teletrade in August 2010 for $1,150. In total, there are only 14 1957-P Roosevelts at this grade between NGC and PCGS.

Compare this to 1957-P non-FT or FB dimes graded MS 68, which is typically a difficult grade to find among the silver Roosevelt dime series. PCGS has none at this grade, but NGC has certified more than 30, and these coins have been selling for $300 to $350 in the past five years.

This dime has a dark green and gold colored toning on both sides with above average eye-appeal. The coin has a below average strike with significant spread in some of the lettering and hairlines.

Torch lines are also fairly weak compared to most of the other dimes in this collection. This coin may be a bit overgraded at MS 67. Nevertheless, a really good looking dime.

Some of the finer details including the torch lines are covered by the dark toning, however it is clear that this dime is not a full torch strike. Significant contact marks include one on Roosevelt's jawline, but overall this coin is appropriately graded and a pretty cool coin for the collection.

The photos are by Eric Hazen. Eric kindly photograph of a few very toned Roosevelt dimes in the collection. And he did an incredible job. Thanks Eric.
