Owner's Description

The Philadelphia mint produced over 50 million Roosevelt dimes dated 1950 and millions survive in uncirculated and mint state condition. Coins with full torch strikes, however, are a bit less common. PCGS estimates that only 80,000 1950-P Roosevelts with full torch strikes survive in MS 65 condition or better.

The 1950-P in this collection is bright white with good luster. There are just a handful of small spots seen under magnification, but the coin has good overall eye-appeal. It has an above average strike with sharp central features, but there is a bit of spread in some of the lettering around the perimeter on both sides.

There are also significant die cracks on both sides. On the obverse there is a thin die crack at the crowd of Roosevelt's head. The reverse has two die cracks. The smaller crack runs from the rim at 12 o'clock to the right top side of the torch's flame. A much larger crack runs from the rim at 5 o'clock through the IM in DIME and bottom section of the torch. These are quite common places for die cracks on silver Roosevelts, particularly the latter. I call these the “Lightening Strike” cracks when both are present.

All torch lines are clear, defined, and uninterrupted. Contact marks are present but consistent with the grade. Overall, this is a very nice dime for the date and an interesting with the Lightening Strike cracks.
