Owner's Description
In its first year of production, there were over 250 million Roosevelt dimes produced at the Philadelphia Mint. This is the fifth highest mintage among the silver Roosevelt series and there are millions of coins that survive in mint state condition. The 1946-P is notable among silver Roosevelt dimes for having several double die variety listings.
The 1946-P that opens The Fear Itself Collection is a bright white coin with good luster and eye-appeal. The details on most of the features are very sharp, although there is a little spread in some of the lettering on the reverse and loss in depth in the middle olive leaf. There may be some very light doubling on both sides of this coin, however I can not identify any specific DDO or DDR listing.
All of the torch lines a very clear and well-defined. Both band lines are fully and complete. However, there is a small contact mark that appears to cross at least one of the vertical lines above the upper band as well as a light contact mark above the lower band. Both of these marks appear to interrupt the continuity of the lines and perhaps should have kept this dime from Full Torch designation. It's a close call.
Other noticeable and significant contact marks on the reverse include a few light marks on the olive leaves, torch, and around the rim at 8 o'clock. The obverse also has some scattered light but noticeable contact marks including on Roosevelt's chin, jawline, and forehead.
All things considered, this dime may grade on the lower end of MS 66 and some may question its Full Torch designation. Still, the coin has good eye-appeal and is a nice coin for the collection.
