Owner's Description
1992 Silver Dollar was issued for the quincentenary of his discovery of the Americas.
(1451-1506), He was one of the greatest navigator and seamen of all time. He is credited with the discovery of America, although Indians had lived there for thousands of years. Also in about 1000 AD Norsemen had explored the coast of North America.
He was not trying to prove the world was round, as was so known. But educated people new it was round. He was just trying to find a new route to the Indies.
NGC UNIVERSAL ID 28RW. Catalog #KM-238. Mintage: 385,241. Population: 38. Pre-issue Price: $23.00. Regular Price: $28.00.
The idea that he was the first person to envision a rounded earth is popular misconception. The round shape of the earth has been known to scholars since antiquity, and was common knowledge to learned sailors.
NOW YOU KNOW: In 1991 author Salman Rushdie published a fictional representation of Columbus in The New Yorker.
