Owner's Description

Amazingly for a coin with five-and-one-half million strikes, only two have managed to reach the MS-67 grade level, this coin and one other at NGC. As you may imagine with that many strikes twenty-one different die pairings have been identified. Sorting them out is problematic. I have gone through them all, and more by process of elimination than firm conviction have decided this is a F-107. That pairing calls for an extra 8 to have been struck between lines 6 and 9 in the obverse shield. Under high magnification something extra does appear in that area, although whether it is an extra digit or not I am hard pressed to say. Die cracks cover a good part of the circumference of the coin on the obverse; from Liberty's head to the O in OF, from the CA to Liberty's foot, and from the botttom of the numerals in the date to the U in UNITED. On the reverse there is a more serious one from the rim at 7:00 up along the sides of the leaves and back to the rim at 9:30. A lovely coin with graceful toning and a strong strike. Bought from Laura Sperber at Legend Numismatics, March, 2006.
