Owner's Description

A magnificently toned coin from a common date, but one I am having difficulty identifying the die variety. F-105 seems to come closest but the match is not perfect. The coin must be an early strike as even though the obverse die crack from the S in STATES through Liberty's head to the cap is present, it is very faint. And on the reverse there is only one short die crack at 9:00, linking the tip of the outside leaf to the next higher leaf. There is some indication that the 2 in the date has been recut, but I can find no trace of any extra digit in the drapery. An early strike of the F-105 pairing would seem to be consistent with most of these, but in a way it really doesn't matter a lot when a coin is as pretty as this. Bought from a Heritage auction, October, 2001, lot 6006.
