Owner's Description

F-101. It is a mistake to lump all these late date coins from Philadelphia as equally common generic type coins. 1881 is a case in point. This date's slab population is significantly smaller than any of its surrounding sisters. Gerry Fortin does acknowledge the date is R-5 with most of the other late dates rated R-2 or R-3. Only two coins have been graded MS-67 by NGC with just one MS-68 finer. PCGS has only graded six coins MS-66 with none finer (for the other Philadelphia dates 1879-1891 PCGS pops 66 and higher vary from 25-70). This is one of the two NGC MS-67's. Heavily toned an attractive deep blue and orange, there are no obvious deficiencies or die cracks to report. Bought from a Heritage auction, March, 2004, lot 5523.
