Owner's Description

F-103, but I am not totally certain of the identification as this die pairing is associated with proof strikes. This coin is certainly no proof. In a date where there are many recut digits, misplaced digits, the F-103's most distinguishing characteristic is that it has no distinguishing characteristics. And on that score this coin is perfect. The partial first S in STATES and the position of the date provide additonal confirmation. I would note that the letters STATES appear to be double struck. Rare in gem grades (there are just three MS-66s and two MS-67s to go with this lone MS-68), but I am not sure this coin lives up to its billing. The strike while decent is not as crisp as one might like. And the coin is mark free, but blast white, one of the few coins in this set in that condition. Bought from a Heritage auction, June, 2008, lot 726.
