Owner's Description

F-101, but no need to specify as even Gerry has only been able to come up with one die variety for this date. From the Heritage sale of Bob Simpson's dimes in September, 2010 (lot 3677). One of three coins graded MS-66 by PCGS with none finer. So far none have been graded at this level by NGC. Of the three coins this is probably the second finest. The third is a coin which was offerd twice by the Goldberg's in 2003, and then by Heritage in 2004. While well struck it has a light stain on the obverse (at 9:00) and reverse (at 10:30). The finest is probably the Eliasberg coin graded MS-66 raw in that catalogue, although I have not since been able to track this down. From its pictures it has a stronger strike and cleaner fields. The current coin is struck from heavily clashed (I swear I can discern a ghostly outline of the letters IME in the field to the left of Liberty), and somewhat strained dies (there are several wrinkly die cracklets throughout the obverse). The strike on Liberty's head is not quite full. Both S's in STATES are missing their tops, and ATE is possibly recut. The coin is lightly spotted on the obverse and moreso on the reverse. There is a light die crack and die scratch in the leaves on the left of the reverse. Still the coin has decent eye appeal and is quite interesting.
