Owner's Description

The Eliasberg coin, lot 1179 from the May, 1996 sale. Unusual for several reasons but mainly because almost all Liberty Seated coins from the Philadelphia mint in the Eliasberg Collection were proofs. There is no doubt this coin is mint state, somewhat flatly struck (this seems somewhat unusual to me in that only 10,000 pieces were struck in toto), from rusted dies and heavily clashed particularly all around the date (looks more like clashing to me than an errant 6 between the 8 and the 6). With only two die varieties to choose from identification should be easy. I go back and forth between F-101 and F-102, but finally settled on F-101, as F-102 seems to be a proof only die. Greer lists only one variety for the date, and there are no photographs in Fortin to help. Bought directly from Laura Sperber at Legend, October, 2001.
