Owner's Description

The Eliasberg coin. R7+ in mint state. This is the sole MS-65 graded by NGC and PCGS, and is supported by only three coins graded MS-64 (two PCGS, one NGC). David Bowers, writing the catalogue for the Eliasberg sale in 1996, felt this coin had no rival for the finest known of the date. Possibly only the Lovejoy coin graded NGC MS-64 in 1990 could be in a position to dispute that. The current coin is a magnificent gem, with only a small mark near the rim at 3 o'clock on the reverse keeping it from perfection. The date is one of those unsung great rarities which pop up over and over again in this series. Bought from a Heritage auction in October, 2001, lot 5971.
