Owner's Description

F-101, the only variety for the date. A key date in the series with only 70,000 struck . (Other collectors have found it a tough date: Pittman F-12, Norweb VF-30, Eliasberg MS-61, Lovejoy NGC MS-63--there are currently no coins at NGC slabbed in this grade, and the current coin bears such a photographic resemblance to the Lovejoy coin perhaps at some point it was upgraded.) The coin is rated R-7+ in mint state. The pops bear this out as only eight coins have been slabbed in mint state, a figure that has been static in recent years. There is one MS-65 out there, followed by this coin and two others in MS-64. An early strike (there are no signs of any die cracks on the reverse), and a strong one. The mint mark does show evidence of repunching. Finally there are some small die chips around the outer points of stars three, four and six on the obverse. Lightly toned, the eye appeal of the coin is terrific. Bought from a Heritage auction, September, 2010, lot 3651 (ex-Simpson).
