Owner's Description

This was the second coin added the the set and the first major purchase (ie. the first purchase for over $1000). A dealer that I had dealt with several times before for other types of coins always tended to have several 1932 eagles in stock in a variety of grades and from different grading services. I knew that the first time we bought a coin for $1000 or more it would be a challenge to convince Choya to support the idea so I decided to pick the battle and start with the gold coin. It was never really an issue of not wanting to pay $1000 for a coin; Paying $1000 for anything can be a real pill. There's a resistance in all of us to the idea of laying that kind of money down and that has to be overcome. I knew I would have an easier time convincing Choya to pay that price for something with $450 dollars in gold value (I think gold was around $900 at the time) than I would with a silver quarter. So I didn't want to start with the 1932-D or 1932-S Washingtons.

I originally wanted to go for an MS64 (or, better yet, an MS65) but I didn't have that much luck at the time. Even so, at an MS63, this was a strong addition to the set and it paved the way for the purchase of some very nice quarters that followed... and who knows what the future holds with upgrade potential.

This is a gorgeous looking coin. As you might expect from an MS63 there is a spread of minor marks throughout the face and fields that are noticable but don't really break the surface. There are some stronger marks near the mouth, near the jaw line, in the feathers of the head-dress near the "TY" in "LIBERTY," and in the field next to the eagle's beak. This coin has a population of 11935, with 7589 in MS64, 1843 in MS65, and 191 in MS66.
