Owner's Description

This was the sixth coin added to the set and the last slot filled so far. It's also the most expensive coin in the set and it became one of the major strenghts holding this set at the top of the category.

The 1932-D was a hard slot to fill. Choya and I had initially been looking into getting an MS63 for this slot. As time went on however, we simply weren't finding any MS63s that had the look we wanted for a reasonable price. That started to become frustrating however after the purchase of the 1932-D cent left this the only hole we still needed to fill (except for the double eagle). I don't know how many coins I showed Choya before this one was purchased. Even this coin was rejected initially for one crucial reason: it was way too expensive. The seller had the coin listed for $4000 dollars at a time when this coin and grade was trending for around $3000. Since everything else had failed to uncover a nice coin, and since we both really like this one, I decided to give it a chance and call the seller directly to see if we could negotiate a better price. I was hopeful that we could because the seller had been unable to sell the coin for several months and might be feeling eager to get rid of the inventory. It turned out I was right and we quickly arrived at a price that was much closer to what I wanted than what they were initially asking and we agreed to take the coin.

I remember waiting with nervous anticipation for this coin to arrive in the mail. I was so afraid that it would be lost of damaged after all that work and searching, and all that money. As it turns out, my concerns were not entirely unfounded. USPS tried to deliver the box to a wrong address on the other side of town. It took twice as long as it should have for the coin arrive and we had to raise a stink at the local post office.

This is a wonderful, problem free coin. The entire coin has a very light patina over most of it's surfaces while still retaining very strong luster. There are specks on some darker toning on the top of the obverse above washington's head. I think the picture makes this look much more severe than it really is. That area is still mostly the same as the rest of the coin but the holder cast a bit of a shadow. There is a nick just below the jaw line and another near the base of the neck on the obverse. Beyond that there are just 1 or 2 minor scratches in the fields. The NGC population is 195 with only 16 finer in MS65.
