THIS COIN: NORWEB Collection pedigree. Smooth frosty fields and meticulous devices are bathed in softly luminous clear gold and lavender of the greatest delicacy and beauty. This is a high quality, near-Gem example with breath-taking visual appeal. In 1988 this coin sold at the Bowers and Merena auction for $8,800., a small fraction of it's value today! Type II/II.
BACKGROUND: The 1878-CC is the key coin in the Trade Dollar series and a classic rarity. Although 97,000 business strikes were produced, mint records indicate that 44,148 were melted leaving a net mintage of 52,852. This melt may have included some 1877-CC Trade Dollars making the net distribution slightly higher. Since few chopmarked examples have been found, it is believed that most of this mintage was distributed within the United States. Only Type II/II varieties are known.
