Owner's Description

Mintage: 104 Million
Full Step Availability: 10%
Populaton MS68: 5/0
Date/mm Availability: Attractive lustrous high grade examples are easily obtainable and this is the easiest "S" mint war nickel to find with full steps.

Coin Description:
Milky golden centers are surrounded by a melange of iridescent colors inlcuding lavender, lime green, sapphire, lemon yellow, and tangerine. A fully lustrous and minimally abraded example with a solid strike that just misses the 5FS designation.

Comments:
Altough attractive 1943-S nickels are easy to locate, he 1943-S is the most challenging war nickel to locate with rainbow toning. This example is certainly among the finest toned 1943-S Jefferson Nickels in existence. The rims on this coin are almost black and the toning is so outlandish that questioning the authenticity of the toning is almost a requirement. Without the toning, I firmly believe this coin would rest in an MS67 holder. Therefore, the toning is responsible for several thousand dollars of the price tag. NGC felt this coin was market acceptable and after hours of scrutiny, I can find nothing definitive to disagree with their assessment. Regardless, it is a magnificent coin with phenomenal eye appeal and one of the monsters of the collection. Surprisingly, this coin was purchased in September 2009 in a Teletrade auction.
