Owner's Description

Mintage: 13.9 Million
Full Step Availability: 33%
Population MS67 6FS (NGC Only): 13/0
Date/mm Information: Most coins are high quality and 5FS coins are frequently encountered with 6FS listed as scarce.

Coin Description:
A text book example of 6 full steps on what appears to be a LDS coin evidenced by the severe die crack and extensive die wear. Despite the condition of the die, this coin is well struck, remarkably preserved, and incredibly attractive. The smooth surfaces are essentially untoned save a few patches of chestnut brown toning.

Comments:
This coin carried a respectable price tag in excess of $500 in the 2010 April-May Central States Heritage Signature Sale. However, that price is only a fraction of the price of a 1942-D Over Horizontal D in mint state. Unfortunately, the registry points for the extremely rare Jefferson variety is only 4 points for the second highest grade in existence. Since the eye appeal of this coin far outweighs that of the 42-D/D and the registry points are higher, this coin will represent the date/mm until the score correction is made.

My 1942-D/Horizontal D PCGS MS64 was purchased in the 2010 July Summer FUN Heritage Sale. The 1942-D over Horizontal D is the undisputed king of Jefferson varieties. The re-punched mint mark was first punched horizontally with the curved side facing down and then corrected. The over mint mark is visible to the naked eye and plainly seen under a glass. Only 122 coins have been graded in all grades with only a scant 14 graded in mint state. The population in MS64 is 5/5.
