Owner's Description

This was a tough date to find, as there is a collector who only specializes in this date and is supposely hoarding many examples. (However, it was worth the wait!). It is fourth in rarity of the with motto eagles, behind the ultra rare 1883-O and the 79-O, and 81-O. There are an estimated 40- 50 known in AU and above, and only 4 to 5 uncirculated.

Census listing PGCS 0/0 (highest is MS61) NGC 1/1 with one at MS64 in the New York Collection. This coin is probably behind the plate coin in the David Akers book that would grade MS63, so it is the third, or perhaps second, finest known. By census listing, it is technically #2.

The coin has ample luster on both sides. The strike is excellent, with all stars showing strong delineation and both 8's strong. There is a small mark between the fourth star and Miss Liberty's nose, and one over (under) the "U" in United States on the reverse, for identification purposes. Eye appeal is outstanding.
