Owner's Description

While this is one of the more common no motto New Orleans eagles (19th in rarity, with 60 to 80 in AU and above believed to exit -- but even still less than half as common as 1847-O), the coin in the Louisiana Purchase is rare, being a PCGS MS62. It has an HW Bass pedigree, and is the second finest known of the issue (PCGS 3/1 NGC 1/1 -- Winter believes this coin is superior to the NGC MS63PL in the listing). As a result, it is a highlight of the no motto eagles.

The Jackson, Tennessee find of 1985 included a number of 1858-O eagles, and this is likely one of them -- perhaps the best as it was scoped up by Bass.

The coin has an excellent strike and full, original frosty luster in the fields on the obverse and reverse. Only issue is a few very light abrasions throughout the obverse - perhaps part of the recovery process? Coloration is green-gold on the obverse, showing through the cartwheel effect and a more coppery-gold on the reverse . This eagle has overall outstanding eye appeal, perhaps rivaling the 1843-O as the finest of the Louisiana Purchase no motto eagle collection. It is one of eight mint state no mottos in the collection.
