Owner's Description

The 1855-O no motto eagle is a rare date, similar to the other coins rarity in what I call "group 2: 1849-0, 1856-O, 1852-O, 1855-O and the 1846-O, with somewhere between 15 and 21 known, each issue, and AU and above. The 1855-O is thus the seventh rarest of the no motto eagles in AU and above.

This coin was the very last addition to the Louisiana Purchase no motto eagles to make this portion of the set complete. Because the Pinnicle Collection did not have this date and a nice coin had not come availabe for a while, it took me time to find a nice example.

Census of the AU 55 PCGS 1/3 NGC 15/13. Only two are listed in MS, both PCGS. Winter estimated only 17 - 19 in AU and above, properly graded, with only 4 to 6 in AU55 or AU58 range.

The coin came from the Ambleside Collection, sold by Doug Winter in March of 2008. What I love most about this date is the slanted "55", characteristic of all gold issues of this date. No other 1850's coins have the slighted 5's.

It has a crusty, totally original luster with a beautiful "orange-gold" coloration around the rim and the stars of the obverse. The reverse has a lot of original mint luster between the letters.
