Owner's Description

The 1848-O No Motto Eagle is the 11th of 21 in terms of rarity (13th in high grade) joining a group of dates with similar rarity, the 45, 54SD, 54LD and the 43. The may have been a small hoard at one time accounting for it relative less rarity in high grade. There is one coin graded MS66 which sets the record price for a New Orleans eagle sold at auction, at $154,000.

Nonetheless, the Louisiana Purchase coin, an NGC MS61 is one of perhaps 7 or 8 in uncirculated. (PGCS 0/6 NGC 4/3), and it is in an older NGC holder. This coin is from the Ambleside collection, and is fairly clear of distracting marks with somewhat prooflike luster on both sides. As is typical, the stars are poorly struck with no delineation lines, and Liberties hair also has a weak strike. The date is thick, with the "4" particularly so (probably with a slight down and to the right second strike) and the mintmark is higher, making it a Winter Variety #1.

The collection also has a Variety Two (Winter designation) PCGS AU58, listed in Jefferson's change.
