Owner's Description

The 1845-O issue is the 14th of 21 in overall rarity and 11th in terms of high grade (AU and above). It's rarity is similar to the 54SD, 48, 54LD, and 43 with approximately 26 - 33 known in AU and above in its case. The 1845-O eagle is reasonably obtainable even in the lower AU grades but it is very scarce in properly graded AU58 and extremely rare in Uncirculated with just four to six known. (The census is inflated for NGC PCGS 5/1 NGC 21/10. Only 5 AU58 and one MS61 (1994) have appeared in Heritage auctions, four of which were NGC. This last one was in March, 2006, as of this writing, April 2008. Why has this date among so many New Orleans No Motto Eagles gone silent?)

This piece is from the Pinnacle Collection and is plated on page 133 of Doug Winter's book. It is a Winter Variety #1 (common variety). The date is noticeably repunched downwards, particularly the "8".

This piece is totally original piece with rich medium to deep green-gold color which changes to orange in the protected areas, giving it good eye appeal. It appears to have seen very little in the way of actual wear and its fields are far cleaner than usual for the date. The luster is hard and frosty while the detail on both sides is complete and bold.
