Owner's Description
Coins seem to come onto the market with a certain degree of cyclical regularity and my last two coin purchases – a 1942 PCGS MS65 and this 1941D NGC MS65 – within days of each other are prime examples. I had gone a few months without as much as a coin of passing interest on the radar when these two came up for auction on Teletrade.

The current coin – a 1941D housed in an older NGC holder – exhibits a very nice overall look. The strike displays the normal flat characteristics across the central devices – somewhat poorly defined hand and weak/non-existent skirt lines – that are prevalent in coins from the Denver mint in the latter years of the series. The Reverse strike detail is generally better, though there is usually some lack of detail in the Eagle’s leg feathers and this is the present reality. The strike will generally establish the core elements of the coin’s grade and I fully believe that this is the case with this coin. Surface preservation – or more specifically contact – is another key ingredient. In this coin I do not find any significant contact in any of the focal points of the coin.

Finally, the element that binds this coin so very nicely to my collection is that eye-appeal factor that I seek – Toning. The Obverse is a very pleasing mix of gold, rose and burgundy. The colors are spread across the surface of the coin’s Obverse providing a great effect when the coin is rotated in hand. There is an extremely nice contrast between the tone and the areas still revealing bright mint luster. The Reverse has a more complete level of tone across the surface, but is more limited in the color spectrum having a predominately gold tint. There is a small area of burgundy along the left side rim that makes for a very satisfying accent. An underlying luster tends to create the illusion of color floating above the surface. All-in-all this was a very gratifying coin purchase and I am proud to have added her to my collection.
