Set Description:
Thanos, the Mad God of Titan, was created by Jim Starlin, my favorite artist/writer of the Bronze Age. Admittedly poaching the concept of Thanos from Jack Kirby's Darkseid character, Starlin began The Cosmic Cube opus beginning with Iron Man 55, and crossing over several titles, notably Captain Marvel and the Avengers.
Upon completion of the storyline in Captain Marvel #33, Thanos was presumed dead until he resurfaced in Warlock #9 in what would eventually become the Soul Gem War. It culminated in Marvel Two In One Annual #2 with the "death" of Thanos.
It took 13 years for Thanos to return to comics, beginning with Silver Surfer (vol.2) #34. This was the prelude to the Infinity Gauntlet and Infinity War storylines.
One constant with Thanos is his love for the personification of Death. Though he is evil, Thanos has become somewhat of an anti-hero, although his infatuation with pleasing his dark lover always gets in the way of him ultimately doing the right thing.
He is an immensely popular figure in the Marvel U, more so than any other villain, which lends itself to Starlin's vision, and the overall versatility and depth of the character.
