I remember when Bane was first announced as the main villain in “The Dark Knight Rises”, and my first thought was – wait, that cartoonishly muscle bound guy with roid rage who dresses like a luchador? How the heck are they going to make this work?
Bear in mind I was never a big Batman comic reader despite seeing all the movies and being a devout fan of the animated series from the ‘90s. But, I did know a little something of Bane because I stumbled into an issue of Batman 499 during college. So I knew Bane was the guy who broke Bruce Wayne’s back, and Bruce had nominated some French guy to fill in for him (Jean-Paul Valley, who I would much later learn was also Azrael). But that was about it.
So…back to “The Dark Knight Rises”. With my limited knowledge, I honestly had no idea what to expect. But Nolan had killed it on the first two movies, so I definitely had high hopes. And once again, he absolutely made it work. How? Ditch the luchador mask for something far more menacing, and Tom freakin’ Hardy. Aside from the voice mod issues many complained about (which I believe were rectified between theater and blu ray), the portrayal was outstanding, and the Nolan trilogy ended on a definite high note.
Fast forward to late 2016, when I FINALLY decided to get into the Batman game, and as part of that quest I decided to put together this little set in tribute to the guy who quickly became one of my favorite movie villains. I won’t forget about Talia and Ras either, they’re just going to cost me a little more…
