Owner's Description

1803 had five die marriages and all together there are only about 175-250 examples known to exist.
I found this coin, while only a VG-8, to be interesting for a number of reasons.
It is a JR-2 which is an R-6, with the total examples extant probably somewhere in the twenties. While I am not really a variety collector, I thought this was pretty interesting - I checked Heritage auctions and the JR-2 has only been available 5 times. The JR-2 reverse was previously used to produce both 1802 JR-3 dimes and quarter eagles. The die crack on the reverse through CA in AMERICA is visible. The obverse was also used for JR-1 and JR-3.
Also, this coin has a pedigree of Rev. Dr. James G. K. McClure, who collected many coins in his life from around 1860 to 1932 when he died. It is an interesting collection that remained in tact until just now when it was auctioned in June, 2016 by Heritage.
