Owner's Description
1863-S Double Eagle, AU58 Surprisingly Scarce
1863-S $20 AU58 NGC. Numerous seawater survivors surfaced from the S.S. Brother Jonathan and S.S. Republic, yet this San Francisco date remains scarce in near-Mint and Uncirculated grades. This flax-gold example is brightly lustrous and sharply struck, and if it is a shipwreck coin the origin is not described on the NGC insert. Numerous abrasions dot the surfaces, although some are merely grazes of the frosted surfaces. One or two orange, copper-alloy spots are minor and do not distract.
