This is a nice example of the Newfoundland series of .925 silver 20 cents coinage. The obverse shows Queen Victoria. Much of the details in the Queens hair and braids are still visible which is uncommon for most Newfoundland coins. Much of Newfoundland coinage experienced extensive circulation. Newfoundland coinage is fairly difficult to find in the higher grades due to low mintages such as this date and the fact that hard coinage was preferred over paper money from 1865 thru 1947 due to two bank failures.
NGC gave this coin an XF-45. The wear shown in the photos is typical of this series of coins but is usually more extensive. I was actually surprised that this coin graded an Extra Fine 45. I had graded the coin a VF-30 before sending it in. The coin also has some very nice toning which is not evident in the photos. If you tilt the coin into the light there are hints of red and gold tones. Over all it’s a very nice example for this series of coins.
