Synopsis: The series begins as a mystery woman wearing a costume reminiscent of Captain Marvel's swoops down to stop a bank robbery in New York City. Utilizing a strange seventh sense that helps her anticipate the robbers' moves, the woman easily dispatches them on the street before they can escape, but remains unaware that the supervillain who hired the robbers to serve as a distraction, the Scorpion, is inside the bank, robbing the vault. The Scorpion uses the $200,000 he stole from the bank to buy the secret laboratory of Professor Kerwin Korman, a weapons scientist employed by Hydra.
A short time later, ex-NASA security chief Carol Danvers interviews with Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson for the position of editor of Jameson's new magazine, Woman. Jameson makes clear that he wants Carol's first article to be a feature on the city's newest female superhero. On the way out of Jameson's office, Carol meets Mary Jane Watson and her boyfriend, Peter Parker, and Carol invites MJ to visit her upscale Central Park penthouse apartment, purchased with royalties from her first book about the space industry. She explains that her inability to capture Captain Marvel destroyed her security career, and she turned to her first love of writing. She asks MJ to leave after suffering a sudden, severe migraine headache.
The Scorpion kidnaps Jameson that evening and takes him to Korman's lab where he plans to drop Jameson into an acid vat to gain revenge on Jameson for turning him into the Scorpion in the first place. The city's new superheroine flies to the Daily Bugle shortly thereafter, warned by her seventh sense too late to prevent Jameson's kidnapping but confident that being in the Bugle building will provide her the necessary vibrations to determine where he was taken. Sensing him in an abandoned house in Brooklyn, she flies there immediately, realizing after a brief conversation with Bugle city editor Joe Robertson that she doesn't know who she is. Once she enters the house, she realizes while evading the lab's traps and fighting the Scorpion that her abilities come from the alien Kree, explaining why her costume resembles Captain Marvel's. She throws the Scorpion into the side of the acid vat, shattering it, and rescues Jameson, choosing for herself the codename Ms. Marvel.
The next morning, a furious Jameson demands that Carol Danvers write a scathing expose of Ms. Marvel. Back in her office, Carol is confused and worried about her increasing migraines and blackouts, and wonders why the mention of Ms. Marvel gives her a strange chill.
