Owner's Description
Classic Comics #15 is referenced in Fredric Wertham’s “Seduction of the Innocent” (SOTI) in the text on pages 102-103.Wertham found little redeeming value in comics based on classic literature and the Uncle Tom’s Cabin story presented in Classic Comics #15 is one such story that he found to be a poor knockoff of the original. He describes the comic as follows “As for counteracting prejudice, which some publishers claim to achieve through their heroes-who-fly-through-the-air, we have yet to see a single child who has even remotely influenced in this way by a comic book. Even the comic-book version of Uncle Tom’s Cabin has been characterized by a pupil in a school magazine like this: ‘The Classics Comics version of Uncle Tom’s Cabin gives the impression that the Negro is still that stereotyped man who sings about ‘going to glory’ all day. Mrs. Stowe’s book shows the Negro to be a human being.’”I have included a scan of the panel with Tom singing “Going to Glory”.
