Owner's Description
First Love Illustrated #35 is referenced in Fredric Wertham’s “Seduction of the Innocent” (SOTI) as illustration #30 with the caption “The title of this comic book is First Love.”The illustration is of a man slapping a young woman and it is taken from the story “Forbidden to Love Him”. Ironically, the story is uplifting in that it tells of a young woman (Susan) who falls in love with a Native American Indian named John. Because of their prejudices, Susan’s parents forbid her from seeing John and the panel referenced in the SOTI is of the father slapping Susan after she refuses to stop seeing the man she loves. The story ends with the revelation that John is a Medal of Honor winner. At a political rally he makes an impassioned speech on the nature of true Americans. His speech shames the young women’s parents and they apologize to the young couple and they are soon married.I have included a scan of the page from First Love Illustrated #35 that contains the slapping panel.
