Story Title: The Hunters and the Hunted!
Summary:
Spider-Man runs into Cloak & Dagger in a warehouse district & helps them take down a gang of car thieves.
They find a bunch of teenagers dead in the warehouse, supposedly from a drug testing just like the one that created Cloak & Dagger.
Meanwhile, the New Mutants, Sam (Cannonball), Dani (Mirage), Rahne (Wolfsbane) & Bobby (Sunspot), are in New York and have seen a broadway show & then get into a scrape at an arcade that turns into a huge street brawl resulting in Bobby & Rahne being knocked out & taken away by some mysterious figures right under the noses of the others, who then endeavor to track them down.
Meanwhile, Spider-Man discovers Cloak & Dagger's hiding place in a local catholic church just as Sam & Dani happen to show up by chance & run into Spider-Man & everyone else.
With a bunch of explanations about the mutant's missing friends, the drug testing, the possible danger to Bobby & Rahne & the need to find out who's behind it all, Cloak & Danger vanish & Spidey & the others go out together to follow.
Later, at a meat plant, Bobby & Rahne are restrained on a butcher block by a doctor & his group, who have been trying to repeat the process that created Cloak & Dagger in order to create another, even more powerful weapon that would be subservient to the drug & them. They inject the kids with the drug & suddenly everyone else shows up & battle breaks out.
During the scuffle, Rahne & Bobby transform into out-of-control beings with heightened powers (check out the second image). Rahne then bites Dagger & while Rahne becomes normal again, Dagger receives the effect of the drug, making HER more powerful & out-of-control!
Cloak then envelops Bobby in his cape & Bobby comes out fine, but Cloak is then encumbered with the drug's effect.
With the others looking on, Cloak & Dagger go at each other with their enhanced light & darkness powers & wind up canceling each other out.
Spider-Man then tells Cloak & Dagger that they MIGHT be mutants & should at least consider going to Xavier's school to learn more about their powers, but they decide against it & disappear.
PERSONAL NOTES:
I'm not sure exactly when this issue came out, though I know it was somewhere within the first 8 issues or so of the New Mutants because:
#1) It was published in 1983 and
#2) Amara (Magma) wasn't a member of the group yet.
It's probably best to read this issue right after New Mutants
#4, which is a stand alone issue right before the storyline that leads up to Amara being introduced to the group.
When I was a teenager just getting into comics, it was because of the New Mutants series that I went & got my hands on a copy of THIS issue due to a reference about a drug that was used on Bobby and Rahne.
Being a collector & a completist, I just HAD to get a copy of this & find out what had happened!
