Owner's Description
World’s Finest Comics #44 is referenced in Fredric Wertham’s “Seduction of the Innocent” (SOTI) on pages 9 and 190.
Chapter VII of the SOTI examines the effect comics book have on the “psycho-sexual development of children”. As a part of his analysis, Wertham provides several examples of the homoerotic nature of Batman and Robin stories and one such example is contained in World’s Finest Comics #44. On page 190, Wertham describes a scene as follows “At home they lead an idyllic life. They are Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson. Bruce Wayne is described as a ‘socialite’ and the official relationship is that Dick is Bruce’s ward. They live in sumptuous quarters, with beautiful flowers in large vases, and have a butler, Alfred. Batman is sometimes shown in a dressing gown. As they sit by the fireplace the young boy sometimes worries about his partner: ‘Something’s wrong with Bruce. He hasn’t been himself these past few days.’ It is like a wish dream of two homosexuals living together. Sometimes they are shown on a couch, Bruce reclining and Dick sitting next to him, jack off, collar open, and his hands on his friend’s arm.” I have attached a scan from World’s Finest #44 that provides the scene that Wertham described on page 190.
On page 9, although not in the context of homoerotic assertions, Wertham again references World’s Finest Comics #4 when he describes the following scene “Here, too, is the customary close-up of the surprised and frightened looking policeman with his hands half-raised saying: ‘NO-NO! DON’T SHOOT!’ as he is threatened by a huge fist holding a gun to his face. This is followed by mild disapproval (‘You’ve gone too far! This is murder!’) as the uniformed man lies dead on the ground.”
