Owner's Description
Howdy Doody #6 is referenced in Fredric Wertham’s “Seduction of the Innocent” (SOTI) in the text on page 309.Wertham offers this issue as an example of a comic that appears harmless but actually contains harmful themes such as race ridicule. With regards to Howdy Doody #6, Wertham describes it as follows – “Take one that looks even more harmless, Howdy Doody. I discussed this with a group of white and colored children. Their reaction was partly giggling, partly inhibited. The book depicts colored natives as stereotyped caricatures, violent, cowardly, cannibalistic and so superstitious that they get scared by seltzer tablets and popping corn and lie down in abject surrender on their faces before two little white boys.”For additional reference, I have included a scan of the page that contains the pop corn example that Wertham references in his description of this comic.
