Part of the Mariana Islands, the taking of Saipan would allow American bombers to be within reach of the Japanese home islands. The battle lasted roughly 3 weeks with more than 3000 Americans killed and 10,000 wounded. Of the 31,000 Japanese troops on the island, 29,000 died and 1800 captured. Thousands of civilians perished. The strategic victory was one of the most important as our bombers were able to open the way to liberating the Philippines.
