I absolutely LOVE this cover by William Johnson and Joe Rubinstein! Published in May of 1985, the cover art style reminds me of the classic Garbage Pail Kids, which the original Series 1 would be released just a month later in June of 1985!
Here we see an up-close image of Red Nine backed up in the corner of a midnight alley looking frightened by the unexpected arrival of Spider-Man, as indicated by the background spotlight that contains Spider-Man’s eyes featured across the brick walls! In addition, Red Nine’s red and yellow suit pops nicely in front of the pink spotlight color and the beautiful purple and blue hues that surround the majority of the cover! Furthermore, with his hair being “red” and a large number “9” placed in the middle of his chest, the character “Red Nine” truly comes to life on this stunning front cover!
Who is Red Nine? Wallace Jackson was basically a teenager that acquired a state-of-the-art suit created by his Uncle Steve who works for NASA. The suit gave him special abilities to fly, emit energy bolts and create a force field that could withstand Spider-Man’s web. Shortly after turning 16 years old and witnessing his “superhuman” abilities, his friends insisted that Wallace should challenge Spider-Man and placed him on a bus to NYC.
After searching throughout NYC for “two days and two nights” to fight Spider-Man, Wallace finally finds him and begins to play child-like games saying “you can’t catch me” and taunting him with statements such as “Red Nine is rough, tough, baddest of the bad!” Spider-Man initially avoided Red Nine’s first wave of attacks, leaving the ambitious pupil crashing into a chimney! Without feeling threatened and knowing Red Nine was outclassed, Spider-Man told him to “go home to your mommy!”
Feeling frustrated with his futile attempts in attacking Spider-Man, Red Nine retaliated with a stronger round of offense by using his blasters to their fullest potential. Spider-Man was once again too cunning and outwitted the young lad, leaving himself unscathed. However, as they continued to fight each other, they both crashed through a window at the State Street Hospital in which Red Nine was knocked out. One of the nurses informed Dr. Rattamun that Wallace was unconscious and had a high fever. At this point, Spider-Man decided to leave the boy at the hospital.
After Wallace wakes up, he immediately discharges himself from the hospital to search for Spider-Man. The two begin fighting each other again in the streets, but Spider-Man basically evades all of Red Nine’s attacks with ease and shows his superiority by staying calm. As a result, this made Red Nine even more frustrated because he wanted to prove his worth by giving Spider-Man a respectable battle, but fell short because he couldn’t faze him either physically or mentally.
However, this would change as they continued to fight. For instance, shortly after Spider-Man learned that the suit was made by Wallace’s Uncle Steve who works for NASA, Red Nine accidentally blasted some important papers Spider-Man worked hard to acquire, which finally made him “mad” at Red Nine! Sensing that the fun and games were over, Red Nine decided to retreat, but ended up being stopped and having his suit destroyed by Spider-Man!
Fortunately, Wallace walked back to the State Street Hospital and witnessed Dr. Rattamun mistreating his elderly patients, so he decided to help them tie him up until Spider-Man arrived. After Spider-Man arrived and learned that Wallace Jackson helped the elderly from an abusive doctor, Spider-Man was left with a better impression of the boy amidst their combative first meeting.
Interestingly, Red Nine (Wallace Jackson) would not appear in another Amazing Spider-Man issue, but would make appearances in other titles and eventually get drafted into the Avengers Initiative!
Although ASM #264 is far from being rare, as there are more 9.8 copies on the CGC Census than all of the other grades combined, this particular 9.8 copy is exceptional because it is PERFECTLY WRAPPED and CENTERED and contains PERFECT WHITE PAGES!
In closing, I purchased this pristine beauty from Erik of cloak-com (via eBay) in November of 2020! The transaction and communication went extremely well, and it was a nice addition to Arachnophobia!
Happy Collecting & Enjoy the Hunt!
