Owner's Description

The Story of Harry S. Truman (no number) is referenced in Fredric Wertham’s “Seduction of the Innocent” (SOTI) in the text on page 311. In my opinion, Wertham uses this comic to take a political shot at Harry Truman. He describes the book as follows “Political comic books are the exact opposite of crime comics. In The Story of Harry S. Truman, for example, characters who might well be featured in a crime comic book are suppressed. Boss Pendergast is not mentioned. And instead of him, there is at the beginning of the Truman saga this domestic scene: Young Truman coming home and saying to his wife, “Bess, the boys at the Legion meeting were talking about having me run for county judge.”

For additional context, Tom “Boss” Pendergast was a political boss in Jackson County, Missouri in the 1920s and 1930s and was a supporter of Harry Truman’s early political career. Pendergast was convicted of tax invasion and served 15 months in a Federal prison. To the surprise and dismay of many, upon Pendergast’s death, then Vice-President Truman attend his funeral saying only that “he was always my friend and I have always been his”. By mentioning Pendergast, Wertham seems to be implying that criminals belong in a comic about Harry Truman.

I have included a scan of the page that contains the Legion meeting reference from the SOTI.
