Owner's Description
Zellers Variant. Single highest graded copy (for the Zellers Variant) on the CGC census
A full size promotional comic given away by Zellers Store in Canada. Zellers is a now defunct discount retail store chain that was originally founded by Walter P. Zeller in London, Ontario, Canada as Zellers Ltd in 1928. The original store was bought out by by the American firm Schulte-United Ltd after great success in 1929 but within two years, the rebranded stores went bankrupt. After suffering this blow, Walter Zeller bought fourteen Canadian locations of the failed Schulte-United chain, all located in Southern Ontario, and relaunched Zellers in late 1931 as a store for thrifty Canadians. The chain gained great popularity and continued to expand and prosper though the 1900s until the mid-2000s when a steady decline in management and sales began as more and more stores were beginning to be shut down. Between the years 2011 to 2013, Zellers conducted leasing deals with Target Canada and Walmart Canada in which they acquired the majority of the Zellers stores, but the remaining 64 stores retained by Zeller's began their liquidation sales until they too were eventually closed. Three selected locations were retained to serve as liquidation centers for other Hudson's Bay Company (owner of the Zellers chain at the time) retail chains until 2020. In spring 2023, HBC opened a Zellers-themed section inside 25 select Hudson's Bay stores, but no stand-alone stores currently remain or have been re-established as of July 2023.
This may not be a key comic, but it is something quite unique in a 9.8 grade and acts a bit like a fossil of a well known store in Canada that no longer exists and may begin to be forgotten as the years continue to pass by. I also love the additional Batman art found on the back cover of the Zellers variant as opposed to how ads are ordinarily found on the regular printings.
