Set Description
This set contains my copies of CGC certified La Prensa Silver Age Marvel Comics. Of the 53 copies I have registered here, I think most of them are the highest graded, with around two thirds of them being the ONLY graded copies.

Set Goals
My initial goal upon being introduced to these La Prensa published Mexican issue comics was to try to find some of my favorite first appearance issues of Silver Age Marvel Comics heroes and villains. It didn't take long for me to move beyond that initial idea and expand my search to include other La Prensa comic issues from that era. This time period would mostly be the comics published from mid 1961 and being on the stands thru December of 1969 in their American form, with a few earlier and a few later examples if I can find them. These Mexican publication cousins of the Marvel Silver Age comics are printed from the same original artwork as the American Marvel comics, but frequently have some differences, sometimes minor, sometimes substantial. I've said it before that seeing these Mexican publications are like discovering a room in a familiar house that you didn't previously know about. Most of these issues feature different house ads and back covers. I hope others find looking at this set an enjoyable, perhaps even educational experience.

Amazing Spider-Man #2 Mexican Edition Amazing Spider-Man 2 Universal 6.5 La Prensa seems to have acquired the publishing rights to the Amazing Spider-Man title very early on, as this copy was published the same month Marvel published Amazing Spider-Man #3. Marvel still had Amazing Spider-Man on a bi-monthly publishing schedule, while La Prensa was publishing AS every month at this time. It wouldn't take long for them to "catch-up" and eventually publish bi-weekly, facilitating the need to publish Ant-Man stories from Tales to Astonish and Avengers stories from their title. This particular copy is not only the highest graded at this writing (4/18/22), but it's the ONLY graded copy! I absolutely LOVE how La Prensa kept the "webby" logo from Amazing Spider-Man #1!!! Spider-Man is my all-time favorite comic character and I'm thrilled to have been able to add this book to my collection. View Comic
Amazing Spider-Man #3 Mexican Edition Amazing Spider-Man 3 Universal 3.0 This copy is tied for the highest graded with one other copy as of 4/5/23. This issue is dated one month behind its American Marvel counterpart. View Comic
Amazing Spider-Man #6 Mexican Edition Amazing Spider-Man 6 Universal 6.5 By the time (perhaps even a month or two prior), this comic was published, La Prensa and Marvel were publishing the Amazing Spider-Man title congruently. This comic isn't a "reprint" as it was hitting the stands at the same time (roughly) as the Marvel copies were. As of this writing (4/18/22) this is the second highest graded copy of 3 total graded. There are also Universal copies in 8.0 and 3.5 on the census. This copy stands out a mile away from the Marvel issue due to its bright yellow masthead. Once again, SO happy to add this to my collection! View Comic

Amazing Spider-Man #9 Mexican Edition Amazing Spider-Man 9 Universal 5.0 View Comic
Amazing Spider-Man #10 Mexican Edition El Sorprendente Hombre Arana 12 Universal 5.0 At the point in time that this issue was published, La Prensa had using other Marvel stories in this title, most notably Ant-Man stories from Tales to Astonish, which is why the numbering order varies slightly with Marvel at this time. Marvel issued its printing of Amazing Spider-Man #10 in March of 1964 while La Prensa followed with their version in April of 1964. View Comic
Amazing Spider-Man #11 Mexican Edition El Sorprendente Hombre Arana 14 Universal 5.5 One of the things I LOVE about collecting these La Prensa Silver Age comics is when I see differences between them, and the issues Marvel published! Sometimes those issues are minor, other times MUCH more noticeable. This particular issue stands out to most that are familiar with the Marvel counterpart due to the fact that Doctor Octopus (Doc Ock) is without his trademark glasses on the front cover!!! The few times I've shared it on the CGC chat boards, people notice and mention it almost immediately! I have no idea why La Prensa would make this artistic change, but it sure informs us that the good doctor could use a little eyebrow maintenance!!! View Comic
Amazing Spider-Man #14 Mexican Edition Amazing Spider-Man 14 Universal 4.5 As La Prensa sprinkled in Ant-Man and Avengers stories into this title, they threw the numbering off a bit, as this issue was printed a few months behind its American cousins publishing date. Marvel originally printed Amazing Spider-Man 14 in July of 1964, while La Prensa lagged behind by printing their version in October of 1964. A classic key issue, offering the very first appearance of Spider-Man's most famous villain, the Green Goblin, as well as Spider-Man's first encounter with The Incredible Hulk!!! That's a LOT of action for 12c!!! View Comic
Amazing Spider-Man #20 Mexican Edition Amazing Spider-Man 20 Universal 5.5 This copy is not only the highest graded, but also the ONLY graded copy as of 4/5/23! View Comic

Notable guest appearances:
Gwen Stacy
Flash Thompson

Copy specifics: Unrestored 6.0 ow/w pages. Lone highest graded and only graded copy.

This Spanish printing by La Prensa was printed one month behind the Marvel cover date printing of Amazing Spider-Man #36. La Prensa gained publishing rights to this title fairly quickly and was frequently publishing the issues congruently, month for month, until they started publishing twice a month, which created the need for them to fill in gaps with stories from other Marvel titles like Avengers or Ant Man stories from Tales to Astonish. One of the things I love about collecting the La Prensa published copies is seeing the differences between them and their Marvel counterparts. Sometimes the changes are subtle, sometimes they're substantial. The interior and back cover advertisements and house ads are different as well and some of them are quite amazing!

Amazing Spider-man #54 Mexican Edition El Sorprendente Hombre Arana 73 Universal 5.5 What's THIS? Spider-Man battling Doc Ock while trying to get Aunt May to safety? Well, that's what it LOOKS like, and we can't be sure until we until we plunk down our 12c and get this baby home for a closer inspection!!! Villain covers are always a plus for me and this middle grade pedigree copy hails from the John G. Fantucchio collection! View Comic

Avengers #1 Mexican Edition Avengers 1 Universal 5.5 Since the Marvel Comics Universe began to dominate the Silver Screen, Avengers #1 has started to enjoy a much-deserved, increased level of prominence and status in both the hobby and public awareness! The blockbuster Avengers movies are pillars in the MCU franchise and the importance of the issue that grouped them together for the first time cannot be overstated! This issue is where it all began and the fact that Avengers #1 can still be obtained by collectors of almost any budget, should ensure that this issue is always in demand! Originally printed by Marvel Comics in September of 1963, this edition was printed by La Prensa under its Spider-Man title for the Mexican market in June of 1965. View Comic
Avengers #5 Mexican Edition Avengers 5 Universal 8.0 La Prensa finally decided to halt printing Avengers stories in their Spider-Man title and give the Avengers their own series. This high-grade copy is the "busiest" of the early Avengers covers and Jack Kirby displays one of the many reasons that he'll forever be known as "King Kirby!" Somehow, Kirby managed to feature every Avenger as well as an army of Lava Men onto the small amount of real estate he had to work with! An early issue for sure, considering it's only the second Avengers issue to include Captain America! View Comic
Avengers 9 Mexican Edition Avengers 9 Universal 6.5 View Comic
Avengers #17 Mexican Edition Los Vengadores 25 Universal 8.5 For someone who quit the Avengers at the end of issue #2, the Incredible Hulk sure manages to make a lot of cover appearances in the first 20 issues!!! This high-grade copy is not only the highest graded copy, but it's the ONLY graded copy as of this writing (6/30/22)!!! View Comic
Avengers #18 Mexican Edition Los Vengadores 27 Universal 7.0 Avengers' issues past issue 15 just have a different feel to them, once most of the more powerful members step aside for a while. This upper mid-grade copy is not only the highest graded copy, but also the only copy CGC has graded to date (6/30/22).
View Comic
Avengers #32 Mexican Edition Los Vengadores 84 Universal 7.5 The Avenger's title is interesting for several reasons, not the least of which is that we are treated to the evolution of Hank Pym as a superhero! By issue #32 here, he's been in his Goliath identity for a few issues, and one may wonder if that'll be the final incarnation for him. Um ... not really, but that's a story for another comic! Don Heck turns in an action-packed cover, showing that he can more than hold his own as a cover artist! Once again, this issue is the only graded copy, making it top of the heap in the census. View Comic
Daredevil #10 Mexican Edition Diabolico 10 Universal 8.0 By the time the Daredevil series came along at Marvel, La Prensa was printing right alongside Marvel and began the Diabolico (Daredevil) run with the same number scheme as Marvel. Both publishers' issues running congruently makes it a little more fun (and less confusing) assembling a set! This beautiful copy is the highest and only copy graded as of (6/30/22). View Comic
Doctor Strange #169 Mexican Edition Doctor Strange 169 Universal 7.0 Doctor Strange gets his own series at last!!! Due to the overwhelming presence of Marvel movies in theaters over the last decade and a half, Doctor Strange has exploded onto the scene, elevating his character from that of a third-tier level to a major player at the box office, with 2 hit solo movies to his credit and huge contributions to their biggest films! Of the 5 copies on the census, this is the sole highest graded. View Comic
Doctor Strange #180 Mexican Edition Doctor Centella 12 Universal 6.0 Gene Colan and Tom Palmer turn in an exceptionally inventive cover on this issue, unlike most Marvel covers of the period! Upon some comparison, you can detect some Jim Steranko influence here. This mid-grade copy is the highest graded and only graded copy thus far (6/30/22). View Comic
Fantastic Four #18 Mexican Edition Fantastic Four 18 Universal 6.0 With all that is going on for Marvel in the cinema, this particular issue is certainly one to keep an eye on. Reed Richards having just been featured with his first appearance in the MCU continuity, the promise of a Fantastic Four movie looming in the air as well as already established appearances of the Skrulls, this first appearance of the Super Skrull should be poised for a substantial increase in value and public awareness! The label note dating this issue 3/54 is an obvious typo, one which I will have fixed when I have a chance to do so. This is, once again, the lone highest graded and ONLY graded copy as of today (6/30/22). View Comic
Fantastic Four #44 Mexican Edition Los 4 Fantasticos 71 Universal 7.5 This issue is notable for being the first issue (after the one-off inking of issue #5) of the title that Joltin' Joe Sinnott inked Jack "King" Kirby's penciled artwork, beginning a long and celebrated run on the series! This is the only copy of this issue that CGC has graded, thereby making it the HIGHEST graded! View Comic
Fantastic Four #51 Mexican Edition Fantastic Four 51 Universal 5.0 View Comic
Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos #17 Mexican Edition El Sargento Furia 17 Universal 8.5 This is one of only a handful of Silver Age Marvel war genre comics that I've been able to find. This issue is the lone highest and only graded copy as of today (6/30/22). View Comic
Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos #18 Mexican Edition El Sargento Furia 18 Universal 8.0 This issue features a pivotal moment for followers of the title: the death of Pamela Hawley. Stan Lee and the bullpen gang turn in an emotional story, showing that the Marvel style of storytelling transfers well to other genres, not just the superhero titles. This census topper is also the only graded copy. View Comic
Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos #21 Mexican Edition El Sargento Furia 21 Universal 7.5 Tough to find La Prensa war title, this being the highest and only graded copy as of 6/30/22. View Comic
Strange Tales #101 Mexican Edition Strange Tales 101 Universal 5.0 One of THE most affordable key early Marvel comics, this issue marks the change to superhero stories in Strange Tales, featuring the first Human Torch solo story since the days of Atlas comics (and that wasn't the same Human Torch anyway!). Fantastic early Kirby and Ayers cover! I personally love that these issues, #101 and beyond (for a short while), feature both superhero and PHM back up stories! SO much for your money in these books! Surprisingly (or maybe NOT so), this is the highest graded and ONLY graded copy on the census!! I'm VERY happy to have it! View Comic
Strange Tales #131 Mexican Edition Los 4 Fantasticos 62 Universal 7.5 This issue, near the end of the Human Torch & Thing run in the title, features a little Doctor Strange vignette, which is particularly cool, in that Doctor Strange still didn't make very many cover appearances, and hadn't even had a solo cover to himself at this point! The MMMS cover box on this issue has had the Ting's face removed, unfortunately. This is the highest and only graded copy of this issue. View Comic
Strange Tales #133 Mexican Edition Los 4 Fantasticos 66 Universal 7.5 The second to last issue for the Human Torch and the Thing. Fantastic split cover, spilling over with action! Doctor Strange caught between two angry women? Good luck Sorcerer Supreme! This issue is also the highest and only graded copy. View Comic
Strange Tales #138 Mexican Edition Agente Internacional 4 Universal 7.5 A few issues back, this title shifted to a Doctor Strange and Nick Fury, Agent of Shield vehicle, but titled after Fury. Taking turns being the cover feature, but as I recall, Fury got more covers for a while. I guess they just didn't appreciate Doctor Strange as much as they would come to in the future. As much as you're probably tired of reading it, this is the highest and only graded copy. View Comic
Strange Tales #141 Mexican Edition Agente Internacional 7 Universal 3.5 The rarity of these books (certainly for GRADED copies) is pretty evident when you consider this relatively low copy is the highest and only graded copy. Collecting these Mexican Edition issues presents many challenges for those who endeavor to take up the goal. I'm encouraged by the fact that I've seen growing interest in this segment of comic collecting. View Comic
Strange Tales #142 Mexican Edition Agente Internacional 8 Universal 7.0 THIS copy is one of those issues that I mentioned earlier where the cover colors were changed in the masthead (like the copy of Amazing Spider-Man #6), and it REALLY highlights the issue in a very different way! The yellow masthead really accents well with the other yellow and red colors. Again, the highest and only graded copy. View Comic
Strange Tales #144 Mexican Edition Agente Internacional 10 Universal 8.0 An extremely colorful copy with a floating Doctor Strange head and a flying Nick Fury car!!! Highest and only graded copy. View Comic
Strange Tales #146 Mexican Edition Agente Internacional 12 Universal 7.0 I was SO happy to acquire this copy, as it's the last Steve Ditko art and cover in the title! Ditko had his own style (for sure) and I always felt that it lent itself well to this character. As hard as it is to believe (being the last Ditko, I expected different results), this is the highest and only copy graded of this important issue! View Comic
Tales of Suspense #61 Mexican Edition Los Vengadores 29 Universal 6.5 Iron Man battling the Mandarin and Captain America squaring off against a Sumo! That IS a lot of enchantment for your 12c!!! This copy has an odd cover wrap but it's the only one I've had the opportunity to add to my collection! I guess that makes sense, being that this is the highest and only graded copy. View Comic
Tales to Astonish 51 Mexican Edition Tales to Astonish 51 Universal 6.0 View Comic
Tales to Astonish #67 Mexican Edition Los Vengadores 20 Universal 8.0 Giant Man is barely hanging on (in more ways than one) as he's nearing the end of his run in this title. Having gone from the first superhero in the title as Ant-Man, first as a civilian in issue #27, then as a costumed hero in issue #35, to becoming Giant Man in issue #49, then getting a new, redesigned costume with issue #65 ... until by issue #70, he was gone. GONE!!! What? Yup, Subby took over for him and we had to catch up with him in the Avengers title. This high-grade pedigree copy is not only the highest graded, but the only graded copy. View Comic
Tales to Astonish #69 Mexican Edition Los Vengadores 24 Universal 7.0 This attractive upper mid-grade copy marks the end of Hank Pym's run in this title. A character that I've always enjoyed, I guess he found it more difficult than most finding his way in Marvel's Silver Age. At least he was replaced with an excellent and long overdue feature ... Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner! If you guessed that this copy was the highest and only graded, well you're spot on! View Comic
Tales to Astonish #70 Mexican Edition Los Vengadores 26 Universal 8.0 At long last, finally, in his own feature ... Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner!!! Jack Kirby gives Namor a great launch with a dynamic cover, featured in two thirds of the cover image! This issue has been heating up with the prospect of Namor appearing soon in the MCU! This high-grade copy is the highest and only copy graded. View Comic
Tales to Astonish #74 Mexican Edition Los Vengadores 46 Universal 7.5 Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner looms large on what is essentially the full cover (with a tiny inset block with a pic of the Watcher and the Hulk in it). This is the highest and only graded copy. View Comic
