Owner Comments:

711. My favorite restaurant and also an historic date for the Umayyad Caliphate and world history.

The conquest of Spain by Al-Walid I, the sixth Umayyad caliph, began in 711 when Tariq ibn Ziyad, under the authority of Al-Walid, led an army of Berbers and Arabs from North Africa across the Strait of Gibraltar. This invasion resulted in the defeat of the Visigothic Kingdom and the establishment of Islamic rule in the Iberian Peninsula, known as al-Andalus.
