Unique among an already dwindling population of big cats, the white lion is found exclusively in the Timbavati region of South Africa. Although the white lion has a white, sometimes blonde color, to its coat, the species is the same as the tawny African lion.

White coloration in big cats is a recessive gene carried by both parents, and it is possible for a female to give birth to both white lion cubs and tawny colored cubs in the same litter of new cats. This fourth release continues the Perth Mint’s look at some of the most adorable big cat species in the world through the lens of young cubs at play.

On the reverse side of the 2016 ½ oz Australian Cub Series White Lion Proof Silver Coin you’ll find the image of two white lion cubs playing with one another on the savanna, with one on its back as the other paws at its face. This colorized image includes background designs of the local area, a common theme of all Australian Cub Series coins.

The obverse of the coins features Queen Elizabeth II’s right-profile portrait. Featured on all Australian, Tuvalu, and Niue coinage, Her Majesty’s portrait on these coins is the fourth-generation image created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley.
