Numista Rarity Index:

The breed appeared in the mid-sixties of the 20th century as a mutation of the Abyssinian cat. In order to distinguish cats from this mutation from pure Abyssinian ones, they were given a name of a neighboring country of Abyssinia-Somalia.
The first representatives of Somali cats were unwanted and unplanned mutations of Abyssinian cats. No sooner than 1965 in the USA some cat fanciers became interested in the long-haired strain of this breed and startered its inbreeding. The breed was acknowledged in 1979 and shortly after it spread throughout Europe, gaining even gtreater popularity than the Abyssinian cat.
Somali Cats are mid-sized animals with a muscular and slender stature. The almond shape of their enrapturing, shiny, hazel or amber eyes makes them look oriental.
the Somalis are sweet tempered, friendly and nimble cats which are always ready to play. Their sociable nature results in their constant desire of attention, care and affection which they should receive from their owners. These curious and wise cats are incredibly quick learners what makes them so easy to train.
