Coin Details

Origin/Country: MEXICO - 1823-1909
Item Description: 2E 1861/0GA JG Ex. Pittman
Full Grade: NGC MS 61
Owner: Abuelo's Collection

Owner Comments:

At the time of purchasing (April 2016), 3 at MS61 and one higher at MS62 (NGC). According to Richard Long's book on Gold Coins of the Mexican Republic, 1861 is a common coin, but AU and BU are extremely rare. For 1861 it looks like many varieties exist cuch as 1/0, 61/59, 6/5, 1/0/9/8, as well as normal date. This coin appears to be 1/0, but could be 61/59 as on magnification is possible to see what appears to be a 5 under the 6.

From the sale's catalogue: "Republic gold 2 Escudos 1861/0 Ga-JG MS61 NGC, KM380.3. Guadalajara mint, assayer, "JG". Boldly struck for the type with all features well defined. Ex. Pittman Collection."

This very coin was at a previous sale where it was catalogued as "Republic gold 2 Escudos 1861/0 Ga-JG MS61 PCGS, Guadalajara mint, KM380.3, Fr-91. Mint State with partially reflective surfaces and the usual handling marks at this designation. The overdate is very clear and visible to the naked eye. Very scarce in this quality. Ex. Pittman Collection. From The Law Collection" Back then was on a PCGS slab MS61 (3524465).
