Medal, Plaquette, 1888-1913, Bronze, Belgium. SEA PORT ANTWERP, FEDERATION OF STAKEHOLDERS DOCKS AND WHARFS (Bond der belanghebbenden van dokken en kaaien). Size: 48mm x 70mm. Uniface. Obv. Large Fish wrapped around Anchor, all within banner tablet, with legend, Below a Crown and coat of arms with 3 castles, inside tablet, Sea Port of Antwer with buildings and ships, dates on banner 1888 and 1913. Impressive design. Rv. Blank. Purchased in France. History: A Wine Merchant by the name of Richard Charpentier started a federation or union of dock workers, tradesmen, and others to create improvements on the Antwerp Port, both in terms of benefits and protections for the workers, and for making the port more productive. Also in politics, he founded another organization called Gezondheidscomiteit that played a role in the fight against the great cholera epidemic of 1893.
