Medal, Plaquette, c.1900, Bronze, France. VEILLE FEMME (Old Woman) in the style of Charpentier. Possibly an artist's Proof (Epreuve). Rare or Unique. Uniface. 79mm x 56mm. Weight: 74.6 Grams. Obv. Old Woman from the side, looking right, in long sleeved coat with collar hanging behind head, head wrapped above ear; Rv. Blank, Bas Relief Cast. Extrememly Attractive and Artistic, this was created by a master artist. The experts consulted believe this to be a work by Alexandre Charpentier. Purchased in France. Info on Charpentier: Born in Paris, by 12 years old he was apprenticed to a decorative engraver. This led him to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts where he learned design and engraving (c.1870's). Charpentier produced a great variety of works and he participated in both the established art community and the avant-garde circles in Brussels, Vienna, and Paris. In the 1890's, Charpentier began making adornments, medals and plaquettes both of and for wealthy patrons and the working class. This is an exquisite example of a master capturing frailty, mood and personality of the old woman in the portrait.
