Medals commemorate world's heavyweight championship bout held March 17, 1897 when 167-pound Bob Fitzsimmons won title by knockout over James J. Corbett in 14 rounds. Former held championship until June 9, 1899, losing to James J. Jeffries by 11 round knockout at Coney Island, NY. Acknowledged as one of all-time great professional pugilists, Fitzsimmons had won middleweight title in 1891, voluntarily relinquishing it to fight Corbett; still later, won light heavyweight championship in 1903.
