Medal, 1887, AR, MASSACHUSETTS CHARITABLE MECHANIC ASSOCIATION, 16TH EXHIBITION, NGC AU50, Cert# 3607868-006. Large Silver Medal, actually Julian-Unlisted, this is a Type of J-AM-36 to 41, Size: 51 mm. Designated by NGC as J-AM-41 but that medal is for the 1890 17th exhibition. Julian omits an entry for the 1887 16th exhibition. This medal was unknown and could be considered a Discovery Piece. Obv. Seated Figure with MCMA Logo at right, Ornate work below; Rv. Logo at center top, legend around, Founded 1795, Inc. 1806, Awarded at Sixteenth Exhibit. Ex Heritage Sale, 1/12/2014, Orlando, Florida, Lot 10722, From The Marlor Collection. A wonderful and rare medal with great provenance. History: The Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association (est.1795) of Boston, Massachusetts, was "formed for the sole purposes of promoting the mechanic arts and extending the practice of benevolence."[1] Founders included Paul Revere, Jonathan Hunnewell, and Benjamin Russell. Through much of the 19th century, the association organized conferences and exhibitions devoted to innovation in the mechanical arts.
